World’s First Medical Mobile Video App at DC to VC
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
At the DC to VC: HIT Startup Showcase competition, which looks for the best ideas in health information technology, TeleThrive demonstrated the first application that enables patients and doctors to videoconference through any mobile device.
Mountain View, CA – September 23, 2011 – Doctors can now be seen from any mobile device. At yesterday’s DC to VC competition, finalist TeleThrive demonstrated the latest iteration of its patient-doctor interfacing software. This is the first videoconferencing solution for medical consultations that does not require the use of a computer.
The invitation-only event culminated a nationwide search for the best healthcare technology startups in the United States. Morgenthaler Ventures spearheaded the contest, in conjunction with co-organizers Silicon Valley Bank, Practice Fusion, and Health 2.0 and sponsors Microsoft and Gunderson Dettmer. The initial round was open to all US health IT entrepreneurs. From a pool of over 100 applications, Morgenthaler selected 11 finalists to present before 200 leading venture capitalists, angel investors, and entrepreneurs. TeleThrive competed directly with five of the other finalists for seed funding.
“DC to VC was a great experience,” says Jordan Michaels, CEO, who took the stage. “Matt Van Veenendaal [Chief Technology Officer] and I got the invaluable opportunity to speak with leaders and upcoming stars in our industry. The response to our new mobile app really surprised and pleased us.”
In unveiling the mobile app, Michaels was, aptly, the only finalist to show a video during his presentation. This video showed how a patient waiting at the airport and a doctor lounging at the beach would connect for a complete medical consultation using their iPhones. The app’s structure is similar to that of the regular TeleThrive voice service, which provides access to doctors from all types of phones.
Michaels compares the app to high-quality concierge medicine. “For over a year, we’ve enabled people to speak directly with doctors whenever they want, without an appointment. Now we’ve built a visual layer into the service. Swipe your mobile screen, and see a doctor.”
TeleThrive’s app is available for all Apple devices with two cameras (i.e. iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad 2, and iPod Touch 4G). The company plans to release the app for Android phones by the end of the year.
